Last year Hampshire residents panel put a story in Hydelife about Izzy see below. further mail will give an update. The hampshire resident panel has for the last few years supported the Piam brown unit at Southampton General Hospital. This is a specialist childrens cancer ward that offers treatments and support for families. This is Izzy Story oN the 13th Oct 09 Izzy spent the day having tests in Chichester hospital when the consultant came in and said to Izzy and her parents Dave and Sue 'Im not going to beat about the bush you have a form of cancer' Izzy said 'You die of cancer' so the consultant reassured her that they could treat it at the Paim Brown unit in Southampton so the next day Izzy began her treatment. She was diagnaised with Hodgkins Lymphoma (-Sclerosing type) The 14th October Izzy arrived at the Piam Brown ward where she was given a room which she called the scary room because of a black bin bag covering a vent in the toilet untill a bed became available on the ward. There are 16beds on the ward and 3 day beds. Izzy said its a famtastic ward. Up to now she had been worrying about losing her hair. Arriving on the ward she was the only one with hair so it no longer became a issue for her. Izzy kept her hair in a bag but her hair has grown back now. Her parents remember talks about wigs but Izzy doesnt remember this. On the ward there were many books explaining proceedures written by the many children who have had treatment for various types of cancer. Izzy favourate being Tom has Lymphona. This helped explain what she could expect. On 23rd October Izzy start chemotherapy she had to have two types of this in 15 days on and 15days off repeating the circle. Radiation was worse Izzy had to have a mask made to fit over her head to her shoulders with just a hole for the mouth so she could breathe and a tattoo make on her chest this would be a fixing point for the radiation. During this treatment she had to stay still. She couldnt even scatch her nose. During her treatment she wasnt able to eat foods such as prawns soft cheeses and was a vegitarian before and now had to eat meat for the protiens. Her diet was the same as a pregnant mothers. Izzy loves swimming and was no longer able to go because of the chemicals in the water so that was what she missed most. The treatment causes many side effects such as sickness reflux and constipation to combat these Izzy was given drips and antisickness drugs. During all this treatment the consultant talked through each stage with the family keeping them informed all the time. Izzy would tell anyone going to have the treatment that you will suffer but you can get through it as so many do on the ward. She also made many friends including Lauren and Crystal. They are the ones that really know what you have gone though. Izzy has been busy helping her mum and dad with funraising for the unit and i was invited to their hog roast where Izzy kept everyone in order and raised money selling raffle tickets. They raised £3000 that evening. Izzy has now been given the first of all clears but needs checkups every 3months for 5 yrs so i asked if she was going to rest and enjoy life now. But Izzy being Izzy said no she wants to funraise more and is doing Race for Life soon. Her determination is to be amired. Thats to Izzy and her parents Dave and Sue for allowing us the insite into their lifes and we wish them all the best for the future.
